1/4-28 UNF heavy hex nut, ASTM A194 Grade 2H, formed from quenched-and-tempered 45K medium-carbon cold-heading steel and sealed with an eco-type zinc-aluminum flake Dacromet coat. Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2 heavy-hex geometry-identical to the coarse series at this diameter: 1/2 in (12.7 mm) across flats and about 15/64 in (6.0 mm) thick-with internal 1/4-28 UNF threads held to class 2B. ASTM A194 covers 1/4 in to 4 in in UNC, UNF and 8UN series; heavy-hex Grade 2H carries a 175 ksi proof-load stress with hardness near 248–327 HB (HRC 24–35). The 28 TPI fine pitch lifts the mating stud's tensile stress area from 0.0316 to 0.0364 in², worth roughly fifteen percent extra bolt capacity at the same diameter. The specified mate is an A193 B7 stud; do not mix in A320 L7 hardware.

 

This smallest fine-thread size earns its place where vibration, not static load, is the enemy: analyzer pedestals, instrument clusters, small valve and pump auxiliaries, metering enclosures and laboratory-grade frames that must hold setting through months of buzzing service. The shallow 0.907 mm pitch gives fine positional resolution and a low helix angle that resists self-loosening, but it punishes dirty or burred threads-handle with caps, clean before assembly, and rely on the Dacromet sealer plus qualified lubricant against galling. Expect slower rundown than coarse hardware; use hand or low-speed tools and stop at seating plus the specified turn-of-nut. Dacromet suits indoor industrial air; splash or salt duty demands a duplex topcoat. A 1/2 in socket completes assembly.
