5/16-18 UNC heavy hex nut, ASTM A194 Grade 2H, made from 45K medium-carbon wire by cold forging, then quenched, tempered and coated with RoHS-oriented Dacromet zinc flake. Dimensions follow the ASME B18.2.2 heavy-hex series: 9/16 in (14.3 mm) across flats, roughly 19/64 in (7.5 mm) thick, 5/16-18 UNC internal thread class 2B. Within A194-scope 1/4 in to 4 in-this grade carries a 175 ksi proof-load stress for heavy hex nuts and a hardness window around 248–327 HB, so lot certification should show proof-load results, not just chemistry. The intended mate is an A193 B7 stud; mixing in A320 L7 hardware would call for a different nut grade. Coating build is thin, which preserves the 2B fit without over-tapping, yet the fastener is small enough that gauge verification after coating, burr control and clean countersinks decide real-world quality more than any catalog rating.

 

This middle size balances clearance against clamping capacity on metering skids, sampling systems, instrument manifolds, small valve trim, filter and lubrication heads, blower doors and compact exchanger closures. Choose it when 1/4 hardware lacks margin but 3/8 would crowd the pattern or foul adjacent pipe. The 18 TPI coarse pitch starts easily on short studs and resists cross-threading under power tools, while the baked flake layer separates mating surfaces for repeatable lubricated torque. It suits refinery utility areas, power-plant auxiliaries and indoor industrial service; coastal splash or road-salt exposure still demands a duplex topcoat. Routine 9/16 in drive tools complete the job without special kits.
