The M20 coarse nut shares the material pedigree - class 12, 35CrMoA, hot-dip zinc 55 µm. Width across flats is 30 mm, height 16.9 mm, and the thread after galvanizing is again 6AZ/6AX. At this size the proof load climbs into the range where one nut carries what two M16 nuts would carry, yet the spanner size remains manageable for hand tools on site.
Functions and Purposes
M20 finds its niche in heavy plant that must be periodically split and reassembled: large diesel generator set frames, compressor base frames, and forging press tie rods. The coarse thread is deliberately chosen here because alignment on massive castings is rarely perfect; the thread's ability to take a slight angular mismatch without cold-welding saves hours of fettling. In bridge bearing assemblies, M20 class 12 nuts lock the soleplates to the concrete plinths through long tie rods, where the combined demand of corrosion from de-icing salts and cyclic loading from traffic makes 35CrMoA plus hot-dip galvanizing the standard specification. Another concentrated use is wind turbine yaw drive mounts and blade bearing adapters - parts that see full reversal every few seconds. Maintenance logs from older turbines show that swapping ordinary nuts for M20 class 12 HDG versions extended re-torque intervals from six months to over two years, simply because the alloy resists the gradual creep that loosens lower-grade fasteners. On dockside container-handling cranes, M20 often secures the rail clamps that hold the gantry travel rails to the concrete beam; the combination of thick zinc and high preload withstands both rust and the pounding of wheel flats without cracking.
