The M18 coarse nut under DIN 934 / ISO 4032, property class 12, is made from hardened 35CrMoA and hot-dip galvanized to 55 µm. Across flats is 27 mm, height 15.8 mm. Proof load stress stays at 1200 MPa, but the larger stress area pushes the absolute clamp force a clear step above M16. Threads after galvanizing are tapped to 6AZ/6AX, and dehydrogenation is baked into the process without exception.

 

M18 often appears where M16 is borderline but M20 would force a wider flange or thicker plate that the rest of the assembly cannot justify. A typical home is the hold-down bolts of medium-duty vibrating screens and shaker conveyors. Here the coarse 2.5 mm pitch survives the constant micro-movement and abrasive dust that would gall a fine thread, while the 55 µm zinc jacket shrugs off wet slurry. You also see M18 on bolted joints of mobile crusher chassis, where the nut has to stay put under frame twisting, and on large pump volutes where casing bolts are tightened with hydraulic torque wrenches. Installers prefer M18 because it pairs naturally with standard heavy-series impact sockets and gives a clear torque-tension relationship without being as sensitive to over-tightening as the smaller diameters. On outdoor hoist towers and temporary event structures, specifiers pick M18 class 12 HDG to drop the number of fasteners per node from, say, eight M16 to six M18, trimming erection time while still keeping a simple single-wrench operation. The thick coating removes the need for stripe-coating after assembly, a real saving when the tower is built in winter conditions.
