3/8-24 UNF heavy hex nut, ASTM A194 Grade 2H, forged from quenched-and-tempered 45K medium-carbon steel with an eco-type Dacromet zinc-flake surface. ASME B18.2.2 heavy-hex proportions are unchanged by thread series: 11/16 in (17.5 mm) across flats, about 23/64 in (9.1 mm) thick; internal 3/8-24 UNF threads, class 2B. Within A194's 1/4-to-4-inch scope across UNC, UNF and 8UN, heavy-hex Grade 2H carries a 175 ksi proof-load stress and hardness near 248–327 HB (HRC 24–35). The 24 TPI form lifts stud tensile stress area from 0.0774 to 0.0878 in²-a fourteen percent gain-so machines gain preload without enlarging the tapped hole or the pattern. The specified partner is an A193 B7 stud; do not mix A320 L7 hardware.
Functions and Purposes
This is the first size engineers reach for in real machinery: small press rams and fixtures, adjustment screws on pumps and blowers, motor mounting slides, gearcase jacking points, feeder tuning spindles and tie-rod ends that set impeller or belt position. The fine pitch resolves tenths of a millimeter per turn while its low helix resists shake-loosening on reciprocating equipment-exactly where coarse threads creep. The trade is handling: fine flanks demand clean, burr-free engagement, protected threads in storage, and lubricated makeup to stop galling on the coated surface. Run down slowly, seat fully, then apply the calibrated torque or turn-of-nut value. Dacromet suits indoor industrial atmospheres; splash, salt or aggressive chemicals need a duplex topcoat. A standard 11/16 in wrench or socket covers service.
