DIN 6915 is the historic German national standard for HV heavy hex structural nuts, while EN 14399-4 is the unified European replacement standard covering complete HV bolt-nut assemblies, sharing core technical fundamentals. Both target high-strength preloaded friction-type steel structural connections for bridges, industrial frames and wind power equipment. They adopt identical key geometry: enlarged across-flat width, nut height of roughly 0.8 nominal diameter, metric threads M12–M36 with 6H thread tolerance and Class 10 mechanical property for nuts. Matching hardware rules align: nuts must pair with HV bolts and dedicated thick structural washers to bear high clamping preload above 70% of bolt ultimate tensile strength. Ductility design relies on thread plastic deformation rather than bolt shank yielding, and both follow consistent dimension tables for critical parameters like circumscribed circle diameter and bearing surface width, enabling interchangeable physical fitting of compliant nuts.

First, standard nature and coverage differ drastically. DIN 6915 only specifies standalone nuts as a single-component German standard referencing old DIN 18800 steelwork rules. EN 14399-4 is a harmonized European assembly standard, governing matched bolt-nut-washer sets under the full EN 14399 series, complying with Eurocode 3 and mandatory CE marking for EU construction.

Second, normative frameworks vary. DIN 6915 lacks unified preload testing protocols; EN 14399-4 enforces assembly-wide preload verification via EN 14399-2, with strict batch marking and traceability requirements absent from DIN 6915.

Third, validity and regional application: DIN 6915 is obsolete for new EU projects and only accepted for legacy German structures, while EN 14399-4 is legally mandatory across all European member states. Minor dimensional refinements exist in EN 14399-4 to unify cross-country tolerances, whereas DIN 6915 retains original German manufacturing tolerances.
