DIN 934 / ISO 8673 fine hex nut, property class 12, 35CrMoA quenched and tempered, plain surface without coating. Width across flats 22 mm, height approximately 12 mm. Proof load stress 1200 MPa; thread tolerance 6H. The 1.5 mm fine pitch is the standard fine series for M14, offering a middle ground between the adjustability of smaller fine threads and the load capacity of larger diameters. When paired with a class 12.9 stud, this nut generates sufficient clamp force to preload angular contact bearings and tapered roller bearings in gearboxes and spindle cartridges.

 

The quenched natural finish is important here because any plating would affect the frictional behaviour at the nut face, leading to inconsistent preload from the same tightening torque. An uncoated, hardened surface maintains stable friction across repeated tightening cycles, which is essential when bearing preload is set by torque wrench and must be identical across multiple production units. The fine thread's larger number of engaged teeth reduces local stress and resists brinelling of the bearing race caused by sudden load release. In service, the nut relies on oil splash or grease pack for corrosion protection; it is not suitable for outdoor exposure without additional protection. Common applications include final drive shafts, pump bearing housings, and rotary table drives where the nut remains enclosed and lubricated. Designers choose M14 fine rather than M12 fine when the stud diameter must be increased for bending stiffness, but the assembly still requires precise axial positioning.
