This heavy hex nut is manufactured to ASTM A194 Grade 2H from quenched-and-tempered 45K medium-carbon cold-forging steel and supplied with an eco-type Dacromet zinc-flake coating. Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2 heavy-hex proportions: 1-1/16 in (27.0 mm) across flats, approximately 39/64 in (15.5 mm) thick, with 5/8-11 UNC internal threads to class 2B. The grade belongs to the A194 pressure-bolting family, which covers sizes from 1/4 in to 4 in. Within this size band, heavy-hex nuts are rated at 175 ksi proof-load stress with hardness in the range of 248–327 HB (HRC 24–35). The nut is intended for use with A193 B7 studs; A320 L7 assemblies require their own specified nut grades. Because the zinc-flake layer is only microns thick, 2B plug gauges pass after coating without the need for oversize tapping, and the cured film maintains repeatable friction for hydraulic, battery-powered or manual torque tools.

 

At this diameter, the nut begins to serve as genuine flange hardware. Typical applications include small-bore ASME B16.5 flanges in Class 150 and 300, heat-exchanger channel barrels, small vessel closures, agitator and mixer trunnions, pump case splits, and compressor piping where clearance remains workable. Its envelope also fits crowded module layouts where 3/4 in bolt patterns would not. The 11 TPI coarse pitch provides a practical compromise: rapid run-down and sufficient shear area to support re-torque schedules. The heavy-hex proportions also begin to justify two-handed wrenching. The Dacromet finish is suitable for refinery utility, power auxiliary and indoor industrial service; for marine splash zones or de-icing salt exposure, specify a duplex coating system. A standard 1-1/16 in socket covers both installation and outage rework.
