Product Introduction
This heavy hex nut is produced to ASTM A194 Grade 2H from 45K medium-carbon cold-heading steel, quenched and tempered, then coated with an eco-grade Dacromet zinc-aluminum flake system. It is the default stud-bolt size in inch-series process plants. Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2 heavy-hex proportions: 1-1/4 in (31.8 mm) across flats, approximately 47/64 in (18.7 mm) thick, with 3/4-10 UNC internal threads to class 2B. Within the A194 family covering 1/4 in to 4 in, heavy-hex Grade 2H is rated at 175 ksi proof-load stress, with hardness held near 248–327 HB (HRC 24–35) at this diameter. The intended mating stud is A193 B7; A320 L7 hardware is not interchangeable. The thin flake film preserves class 2B gauging after coating without retapping, unlike 55 µm hot-dip galvanizing, and the sealed surface stabilizes friction for hydraulic tensioners or calibrated wrenches.
Functions and Purposes
If one diameter defines routine flange work, it is this: ASME B16.5 weld-neck and slip-on sets across Classes 150 to 600, B31.3 process piping, valve bonnets, exchanger heads, pump volutes, small vessel nozzles and steam utility stations, usually with spiral-wound gaskets. Its clamp capacity, clearance and tool availability make it the reference point for plant torque tables and hot-bolt procedures. The 10 TPI coarse pitch handles field handling and repeated assembly without fuss, and heavy-hex flats resist rounding at service intervals. Treat Dacromet as an industrial-atmosphere finish-splash zones and road salts demand a duplex coat and requalified friction data. A standard 1-1/4 in socket or torque tool covers the job.
