1/2-13 A194 2H Nut — The Flange Workhorse in Dacromet Finish

1/2-13 UNC heavy hex nut, ASTM A194 Grade 2H, produced from quenched-and-tempered 45K medium-carbon cold-forging steel with an eco-grade Dacromet zinc-flake coating-the classic pressure-boundary fastener in inch-series plants. Per ASME B18.2.2 heavy-hex: 7/8 in (22.2 mm) across flats, about 31/64 in (12.3 mm) thick; internal 1/2-13 UNC threads, class 2B. Within A194's 1/4-to-4-inch scope, heavy-hex 2H nuts are rated at 175 ksi proof-load stress with hardness near 248–327 HB (HRC 24–35), and the intended partner is an A193 B7 stud; A320 L7 assemblies belong to other nut grades. Because the zinc-flake layer is only microns thick, 2B plug gauges pass after coating without oversize tapping, while the cured film stabilizes friction for hydraulic torque wrenches, battery tools or manual calibration.

 

This is the workhorse of small-bore flanged joints: ASME B16.5 companion-flange sets, valve and gasketed bonnets, pump volutes, compressor nozzles, exchanger heads and steam utility stations assembled with spiral-wound or jacketed gaskets. Its balance of clearance, clamping length and tool availability makes it the default reference size for bolt-torque tables and tensioning procedures. The 13 TPI coarse pitch tolerates field handling and re-assembly better than fine threads, and heavy-hex flats resist damage during repeated hot torquing. Treat Dacromet as an industrial-atmosphere finish-for marine splash or de-icing exposure move to a duplex coat and requalify the friction factor. Routine 7/8 in impact or torque tools complete the job anywhere in the plant, outage after outage.
