Do Nuts Need Washers?
Dec 13, 2025
Whether or not to add a washer during nut installation depends on the specific circumstances.
First, the contact surfaces of the bolt and nut must be considered. If the contact surfaces are smooth and without defects, a washer may not be necessary. However, in special operating environments such as high-pressure pipelines, high temperatures, humidity, or frequent vibration, a washer can significantly improve the sealing and stability of the connection, effectively preventing safety accidents that may result from a loose nut. Furthermore, the thread type is also a determining factor. Precision threads may be damaged by a washer, while conventional threads can benefit from an increased contact area and enhanced strength through a washer. Therefore, when assessing whether a washer is needed, a comprehensive consideration of factors such as the condition of the contact surfaces, the operating environment, and the thread type should be taken into account to ensure a safe and reliable connection.
