DIN935 is a German standard hexagonal slotted nut (also known as castle nut), which is mainly used in high-vibration applications requiring cotter pin locking. It is manufactured in accordance with the DIN 935 series standards. Common performance grades of steel nuts are Grade 6/8/10, and the corresponding grades of stainless steel nuts are A2-70/A2-50. The production process mainly includes cold heading/hot forging, slot milling, heat treatment and surface treatment. Alternative products include ISO 7035, GB 6181 and various types of lock nuts.

Product Overview and Core Applications
DIN935 is a hexagonal nut with radial slots at one end. The number of slots increases with the nut size (6 slots for nuts ≤ M39, 8 slots for M42-M68, and 10 slots for nuts ≥ M72). It is used in conjunction with drilled bolts and cotter pins, and achieves anti-loosening effect by inserting cotter pins through the slots. It is suitable for safety fastening in vibration-intensive working conditions in industries such as automotive, machinery and aerospace to prevent accidental loosening of nuts.
Production Standards and Performance Grades
• Main standards: DIN 935-1 (metric coarse/fine threads, product grade A/B), DIN 935-2 (M42-M160×6, grade B), DIN 935-3 (coarse threads, grade C).
• Equivalent standards: ISO 7035, GB 6181, ASTM A563 (for partial specifications).
• Material performance standards: Steel parts refer to DIN EN ISO 898-2, stainless steel parts refer to DIN EN ISO 3506-2, and non-ferrous metal parts refer to DIN EN 28839.
Mechanical Properties (Typical Values)
- • Carbon steel (Grade 8): Tensile strength ≥ 800MPa, yield strength ≥ 640MPa. Proof load shall comply with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 898-2.
- • Stainless steel (A2-70): Tensile strength ≥ 700MPa, yield strength ≥ 450MPa. Proof load shall comply with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 3506-2.
- • Key indicators: Hardness, decarburization layer, thread accuracy, slot width and slot depth tolerance shall meet the dimensional and geometric tolerance requirements specified in DIN 935-1.
Production Process
Material Selection:
Carbon steel (e.g., SWRCH35K), stainless steel (304/316), copper alloy, selected according to performance grade and corrosion resistance requirements.
Forming:
Cold heading (for small and medium-sized specifications) or hot forging (for large-sized specifications) to produce hexagonal blanks, ensuring metal flow lines and mechanical strength.
Slotting:
Milling or sawing to process radial slots, controlling slot width, slot depth and symmetry to ensure smooth assembly of cotter pins.
Heat Treatment:
Quenching and tempering are required for Grade 8/10 carbon steel nuts to improve hardness and strength; stainless steel nuts generally do not require heat treatment (A2-70 nuts are in solution-annealed state).
Surface Treatment:
Zinc plating, colored zinc plating, dacromet coating, black oxide coating, etc., to improve corrosion resistance.
Inspection:
Full-size inspection, thread go-no-go gauge test, hardness test, proof load test, surface quality inspection.

Key Production Points and Quality Control
• The coaxiality tolerance between the slot position and the bolt hole shall be ≤ 0.1mm, and the slot width tolerance shall be ± 0.1mm to avoid cotter pin jamming or loosening.
• After heat treatment, the decarburization layer shall be controlled within ≤ 0.01d to prevent the reduction of thread strength.
• After surface treatment, the salt spray test duration shall be ≥ 48 hours (for galvanized passivation) to ensure corrosion resistance.
