Threaded rods and lead screws are two common mechanical transmission components, but they differ in function and application.

 

A threaded rod typically refers to a long, threaded part with continuous threads. Its main function is to transmit linear motion or force through its engagement with a nut. The thread of a threaded rod can be single-start or multi-start, and its pitch, thread profile, and other parameters will vary depending on the application requirements. Threaded rods are generally used in applications requiring large strokes or precise position adjustments, such as machine tool guideways and lifting platforms. Lead screws, on the other hand, focus more on the conversion between rotary and linear motion. They typically form a helical transmission mechanism together with a nut. The structure of a lead screw is relatively complex, and in addition to the threaded part, it may include support journals, keyways, and other structures to adapt to different installation and transmission requirements. Lead screws are widely used in various mechanical equipment requiring precise control of motion trajectory and position, such as CNC machine tools, robots, and automated production lines. From a technical perspective, threaded rods mainly rely on the friction of the threads to achieve transmission, while lead screws convert rotary motion into linear motion through helical transmission, generally offering higher transmission efficiency and precision. In terms of application scenarios, threaded racks are more suitable for applications requiring larger strokes and lower precision, while lead screws are more suitable for applications requiring high precision and high-efficiency transmission. Furthermore, the two differ in manufacturing processes and material selection. Threaded racks have a relatively simple manufacturing process and a wider range of material choices; while lead screws, due to the need to withstand higher loads and speeds, typically use high-strength, high-wear-resistant materials and undergo precision machining and heat treatment processes. Regarding industry standards, both threaded racks and lead screws have their own standards and specifications to ensure the stability and reliability of their quality and performance.
